"Why did our employees appear so uncomfortable when I asked for their feedback? Why didn’t they like sharing their own experiences? Why didn’t they participate more?” If you’ve never asked yourself these questions after a meeting or course, you most likely will; however, without our conscious awareness, these questions reflect a Western-centered approach to interactions. This approach is destined for obsolescence as our organizations become more diverse with employees who bring a greater variety of cultural norms to the workplace. Thus, the more relevant question becomes, “How can I step out of my cultural expectations to recognize and appreciate those of my employees and learners?” This presentation by Suzette Plaisance Bryan, PhD, SPHR, GPHR , SHRM-SCP will integrate the neuroscience of engagement with ideas generated through over 40 years of research on cultural differences. While neuroscience explains the evolutionary aspects of learning and engagement, expectations related to culture have a significant impact on individuals’ perceptions of information presented in an organizational setting. Suzette Plaisance Bryan, Ph.D., SPHR, GPHR, SHRM-SCP has an extensive background in human resources and corporate training and development.
A former college professor, she has presented at numerous conferences, most recently in Athens, Greece; Belfast, Ireland; and Vevey, Switzerland. Her work has been published by the Consortium for the Study of Emotional Intelligence in Organizations. She has published book chapters and articles in academic and professional journals and has taught organizational communication courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. She is co-author of Scripts and Communication for Relationships recently published by Peter Lang Publishing.
She worked for Nestle’ Health Science as a leadership and organizational development specialist and presently is employed at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana as a Leadership Development Consultant. She has completed a six-month program in the Foundations of Neuroleadership, earning a Certificate of Distinction. She lives with her husband and occasionally two ferrets in Mandeville, LA.
